NUVANA.

Hello Friends—

As some of you know I work with my father at the non-profit, Nuvana.org.  Nuvana makes socially-networked games for the Web and mobile devices that spark positive behavioral change in people of all ages—in the real world.  Nuvana games engage, educate, empower, activate, and massively grow communities.

I’m so excited that we just launched our new website—go check it out here.  Along with my father (who is a GREAT writer), I will be contributing to the Nuvana blog.  The blog will focus on educational reform, social-impact gaming and the San Francisco Giants ;).

What I am most thrilled about is Nuvana’s newest product: THE MVP—or the Mega Versatile Platform.  Nuvana has been doing service jobs for awhile now—working with esteemed partners from the Nike Foundation to the Smithsonian, but we’ve finally been able to refine our game engine to create an off-the-shelf / DIY platform that can address just about any community’s needs.  If you are a non-profit, a school, a large or small business, a policy-maker – you name it – and you want to bring gamification to your space, now you have an affordable yet powerful solution.

Perfectly poached salmon from Alice Waters:

Large saucepan + 1-2 inches water + 2 slices lemon + 2 sprigs parsley + generous splash of white wine.

Bring water to a boil, and then a barely perceptible simmer.

Buy beautiful salmon steaks, fresh.  These are from Citerella.

Wash & salt n’ peppa your beautiful salmon steaks, and then slide them (carefully!) into the saucepan, skin-down.  Let simmer for four minutes, then flip over and let simmer for six minutes.

After this process, if done correctly, your salmon should be perfectly poached and flawlessly pink inside.  Probe to make sure they are done, and serve with your favorite green veggies, etc.

In my case:

Roasted green beans, arugula and avocado, pinot grigio and red robots.  Squeeze lemon on everything!

Greatest Hits from The Met Gala 2012.

Arizona Muse in Erdem.

So many backless looks—which in my opinion is incredibly sexy and mysterious.  Love the sleeves, too.   The lace is so subtle, and subtlety is something that I always appreciate.

Joan Smalls in Balmain.

It was so fun to see some bare legs on the red carpet (e.g. Kate Bosworth in custom Prada feathers).  I also think the slicked back hair is super cool—a nice little Matrix moment, tailored for the fashion world.

Carine Roitfeld in Givenchy Haute Couture.

Pure sensuality.  The thin straps and fringe perfectly balance the the masculine coat.  Angies right leg, meet the editrix’s left leg.  Also digging the far that her hair is not super done—instead it is sexy & natural.  The way it should be.

Lana Del Rey in Altuzarra.

Obviously.  Dark lip + cape = awesome.  Like a dark fairytale!

Lunchtime.

I posted this picture on Instagram of my favorite quick & easy lunch and it got so many ‘likes’ that I thought I’d share the recipe, if you could call it that…  It’s so easy and takes only 7-8 minutes so if you’re on the go this is the perfect mid-day fix:

My trainer got me into rice cakes—they’re perfect for after a workout with almond butter.  My favorite are made by Lundberg because they’re organic and come in lots of different flavors.  For the creation above, start out with Lundberg’s eco-farmed brown rice cake and add 1 tbs. hummus and a quarter of an avocado.  Inspired by Cafe Gitane’s infamous avocado toast, I just smash the avocado down with a fork—very messy, super easy.

Now for the boiled egg—which is no easy matter.  Perfectly boiling an egg is an art…it doesn’t just magically happen.  It requires attention, patience and a whole lot of trial and error.  Clearly—tossing an egg in a boiling pot can yield a variety of different outcomes and it’s up to you to figure out what suits you best:

*Image taken from www.seriouseats.com.

Personally I like something in between the egg on the top right and the bottom left, which takes about 4 minutes for a medium-sized egg in boiling water.  Once you’ve taken the egg out, don’t forget to run it under cold water to stop it from cooking.  Cut your perfectly soft-ish boiled egg up into slices and mush it on top of your rice cake.  This process isn’t pretty but don’t stress—gooey is good, and I promise it will taste delicious.  Simply add some fresh lemon juice, a dash of salt, ground black pepper and a pinch of crushed red pepper and you’re done!  If you’re feeling crazy sprinkle some feta cheese on top—you won’t regret it.  Voila, a healthier version of an open faced sandwich with just enough protein, good fats and whole grains to get you through the afternoon.

TYPEE.

Ever since my boyfriend and I got back from Jamaica I can’t stop reading adventure novels.  I just finished up Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life.  An argument for purity over convention—in other words, true beauty:

“People may say what they will about the taste evinced by our fashionable ladies in dress.  Their jewels, their feathers, their silks, and their furbelows, would have sunk into utter insignificance beside the exquisite simplicity of attire adopted by the nymphs of the vale…I should like to have seen a gallery of coronation beauties, at Westminister Abbey, confronted for a moment by this band of Island girls; their stiffness, formality, and affection, contrasted with the artless vivacity and unconcealed natural graces of these savage maidens.  It would be the Venus de’ Medici placed beside a milliner’s doll”—Melville, Typee (1972).

ARTLESS VIVACITY.  I need some more of that.  Something to remember during New York City’s gala season ;)

AEROSPACE

*Image from Daily Candy.

So I’ve gotten really, really into boxing.  I don’t know what my new boxing obsession says about my stress levels lately but I’m finding it incredibly cathartic these days.  I’ve been going to boxing classes at Equinox, and feeling really smitten about how much I’ve improved since the first class and digging the new muscle definition in my arms.  Just as I started to feel pretty good about my new favorite hobby…I checked out AEROSPACE NYC.

First off, AEROSPACE is truly AWESOME.  The studio is sleek and super beautiful, and former #1 middleweight champion boxer Michael Olajide Jr. could not be a cooler teacher. He honestly moves like a tornado—it took me a few minutes of watching him flit around the studio to get my wits about me and attempt to keep up.  His partner is the lovely Leila Fazel, former ballet dancer and spa guru.  Combining innovative work-out techniques, one class can torch up to 1,200 calories.  After leaving my first class dripping with sweat I completely believe it—a total fitness solution.

Clients include Doutzen Kroes, Will Smith and Adriana Lima—not bad company, right?   I’ve recently linked up with FITiST, this amazing one-stop booking site for wellness and fitness.  I’m completely hooked on trying new classes all around the city—more to come on FITiST soon!

WHERE:
332 West 13th Street New York, NY 10014 in Manhattan’s meat-packing district.

Who’s Your Padre?

So I didn’t have a wild and crazy Spring Break…but my boyfriend did, which is funny considering I’m the one still in college.  Simon was shooting down in Texas, which just happened to coincide with Spring Break 2012.  He was smack dab in the middle of the madness and captured every last bit of it, so even if the go-hard-or-go-home undergrads on South Padre Island won’t remember their week in the sun, at least someone was there to take a record of all the antics.

These are some of my favorite portraits that Simon’s taken—as he said, there’s something scary and something beautiful about these images.  See for yourself:

Special thanks to the sweet Alec Friedman for sharing them on dossierjournal.com.  See the full story here.

MADE BY NIKE

I’ve been dying to share this with you all FOREVER and it’s finally out—and on April Fools Day no less!  Last Fall I got asked to be a part of a Made By Nike campaign and of course I had to accept.  I’m such a jock at heart: my plan A was to become the first woman in the MLB (playing for the San Francisco Giants, obviously), plan B was to become an Olympic softball player…and now I’m happily living out my plan C in New York City working in entertainment & media.  But Made By Nike is super cool—curated, unique and dripping with that ‘Just Do It’ thing.

Check out my video below.  I am proud to say I got the full Nike treatment and even got to tap into my inner-volleyball team captain.  Thanks to the amazing team who made us all look glamorously sweaty—you rule!

I’m thrilled to be working with Nike’s corporate team—I’ve spent the past couple years working with the Nike Foundation’s inspiring Girl Effect.  The non-profit I work with, Nuvana.org, designed a platform in partnership with The Nike Foundation and Grameen Bank that propels low-income girls on the path toward financial independence.  This GNext program launched in New York City around the same time as this shoot, and moves the girl effect forward—unleashing girls’ potential as the most powerful force for positive change.  What an amazing company!

xx
